Meeting Matt Kurtz​​

We first met Matt in one of those “right place, right time” moments. On September 21, 2021, Jen Maurer had him up to sing a few songs during her set at Old 97 in Kenmore, out on their beautiful patio. It was one of those perfect fall evenings, and the first song he played was Back Again. From the opening lines, we were pulled in. His words felt lived-in, his voice carried a kind of quiet strength, and the song itself lingered with us long after that night was over.

After that, we kept listening — not only to Back Again but to Matt's 107 album. Over time, his songs became part of the soundtrack to our own conversations and drives. We’d talk about Matt’s music like we were talking about an old friend, even though we’d only really heard and met him that one night. So when we finally reached out recently to get his approval to release our cover, it hit us that he probably had no idea who we were!

That’s part of the magic of songwriting — how someone’s music can weave itself into your life and feel personal, even from a distance. When we began shaping the idea for Songs from Dusk, Back Again was at the top of the list.

Although we had our own style and musical ideas, we wanted to stay true to the feeling behind the song — the heart that made it so moving in the first place. Recording it was both humbling and inspiring, and now we get to share it with you.
